Names of 7 police officers killed in nine-hour Kapenguria siege
One recce squad officer, an OCS and five police officers were killed by their colleague at Kapenguria Police Station on Thursday.
The offices are:
- CI Vitalis Ochido, OCS Kapenguria Police Station.
- CPL Wilson Karani
- CPL Katana Kitu
- CPL Gideon Ochieng
- PC Robert Kinyua
- PC Cornelius Rono
- Dennis Momnanyi of GSU recce COY Ruiru
The seven were killed in a nine-hour siege at the station that started at around 5.30am.
Momanyi was part of the response team and was shot during the assault to retake the station. The gunman also died during the shootout.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet earlier in the day sent out a statement saying the gunman was a terror suspect in custody.
It is alleged that he grabbed a gun from a police officer and started shooting the officers indiscriminately.
Details later emerged that the gunman, Police constable Abdihakim Maslah, was attached to the station but had been serving at an outpost.
Maslah is said to be a radical who stormed the station to rescue a suspected al Shabaab terrorist who is a teacher by profession.
The officer who hailed from Garissa County graduated from the Kiganjo police training college in 2013.
