Kibra family seeks justice for their Leeds University son shot by police
A family in Kibra is seeking justice after their son was allegedly killed by police officers in the area.
23-year-old University of Leeds student Carilton David Maina was shot dead on Saturday morning.
The deceased was on long holiday and had returned to the country to visit his family.
His love for football earned him a scholarship at the UK college soon after clearing his high school education at the Maseno School in 2013 where he emerged with an A-plain.
After failing to secure a VISA, Maina involved himself with a local football team – Inter Jinamori – that was based at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Maina’s mother, speaking to Citizen TV, said he had come to visit her to discuss his academics as he had stayed longer than expected.
But the discussion was never to be, as the mother retired to bed hoping to have the discussion on December 22.
Maina was shot by police officers on Sunday Morning despite reports that he had surrendered; a case local residents believe is another extra judicial killing incident that shouldn’t go unpunished.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already formed a team to investigate the matter.
