Kenya’s e-Citizen Platform Sets Global Record With Sh400B Revenue
Kenya has emerged as the world’s first nation to provide an extensive suite of over 18,000 government services through its unified e-citizen platform.
This achievement was announced during a high-level meeting at Nairobi’s Immigration offices, where Interior Principal Secretary Julius Bitok briefed Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on the platform’s remarkable progress. The financial impact of this digital transformation has been substantial, with the platform generating an impressive Sh400 billion in revenue during the 2023/2024 fiscal year. This figure represents a dramatic increase from previous years, with daily collections by the Immigration Department now ranging between Sh900 million and Sh1 billion, a stark contrast to the sh60 million collected when the platform hosted fewer than 400 services.
The scope of this digital transformation is particularly noteworthy when compared to other nations. Kenya has significantly outpaced countries like Rwanda, which offers approximately 700 online services, and has surpassed many European nations in terms of digital service integration. The government has successfully integrated 17,692 services onto the platform, representing 85 percent of the 20,721 services identified for digitization. Additionally, more than half of all state organs have been incorporated into the system, with 288 out of 547 ministries, departments, and agencies now fully operational on the platform.
The platform’s efficiency is evident in the substantial volume of documents processed during the 2023/2024 financial year. The system has facilitated the issuance of over half a million passports, processed numerous permits and visas, and managed the registration of more than a million births. The platform has also streamlined immigration processes, successfully managing nearly seven million clearances at entry points and registering over 145,000 refugees. To enhance transparency and reduce potential corruption, the government has simplified payment processes by consolidating multiple payment channels into a single mobile payment number: 222222.
This streamlining effort aims to minimize cash handling and reduce opportunities for financial impropriety. During the meeting, Acting Interior CS emphasized that reducing direct cash interactions between government officers and citizens is crucial in combating corruption. Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi praises the Immigration department’s dedication while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a service-first mindset.
