Kenyan Man in Nottingham Dies Suddenly After Evening With Family and Friends
David Gitonga, a member of the Kenyan community in Nottingham, died suddenly after going to bed following an evening barbecue and Mugithi celebration.
Gitonga had spent the evening with family and friends and showed no signs of illness before retiring for the night. His wife discovered him dead in his sleep the following morning. Medical examinations later confirmed that he had suffered a fatal heart attack. He had no known history of underlying health problems.
His death has left his family, friends and members of Nottingham’s Kenyan diaspora mourning. He was a familiar figure at community gatherings and was remembered for his warm and jovial personality.
Family members and friends have been meeting regularly to support Gitonga’s household and organise his funeral. A church service will be held on Friday, 18 September 2026, at St Margaret’s Church, Aspley Lane, Nottingham (NG8 5GE), starting at 10:30 am.
The burial will take place at Highwood Cemetery, Low Wood Road, Nottingham (NG6 7GA) from 1:45 pm to 3 pm. A wake will then be held at the Marcus Garvey Community Centre from 4 pm to 11 pm.
Free parking will be available at all three venues. Mourners have been asked to wear black, with an optional touch of purple. The family has also appealed for financial and practical support as they prepare for the funeral and continue to assist the bereaved household.
