Kenyan-born Huldah Momanyi Wins DFL Endorsement in Minnesota Senate Race
Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley has secured the endorsement of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party for Senate District 38A after winning a vote at a local party unit meeting.
Hiltsley, who won the DFL primary on 11 August, announced the endorsement on social media following weeks of internal disagreements within the party. She said attempts had been made to prevent her from receiving the endorsement but that the matter was ultimately put to a vote, which she won by a majority.
“After all the manoeuvring, whispering, unfounded claims, rumours with no receipts, and political gymnastics, the endorsement went to a vote, and I won by majority,” Hiltsley said.
The endorsement gives Hiltsley additional support as she prepares for the November general election. Party endorsements can help candidates organise volunteers, strengthen fundraising efforts and mobilise voters.
Hiltsley thanked residents of Senate District 38A and said she was prepared to work with anyone committed to advancing the community and maintaining Democratic control. She described the endorsement as a further expression of voters’ and party members’ choices.
“First, the voters spoke at the ballot box on Aug. 11. Then, the majority spoke at the SD38 Party Unit meeting,” she said.
Her comments also reflected the divisions that preceded the endorsement. She referred to “schemes” and “goalpost shifting”, portraying the vote as the conclusion of efforts to challenge her candidacy within the party.
With the primary and party endorsement secured, Hiltsley now faces the broader task of winning support in the November election. Her campaign will need to reach voters beyond her existing base and set out policies that address the concerns of the district’s diverse electorate.
