Kenya Airways New York Flight Returns to Nairobi After Technical Fault

Kenya Airways confirmed that one of its flights to New York returned to Nairobi on Sunday evening after a technical fault was detected during the journey.

The aircraft turned back as a precaution and landed safely at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The incident involved flight KQ 002D, which departed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 19:50 local time on 5 July 2026.

The Boeing aircraft developed a fault in its spoiler control system while flying through Chadian airspace, around four hours after take-off. Spoilers are panels mounted on an aircraft’s wings that reduce lift and increase drag, particularly during descent and landing.

A fault in this system can affect the aircraft’s handling by causing uneven spoiler deployment or preventing the system from responding correctly. It can also increase fuel consumption. Although such faults are uncommon, they require flight crews to follow established procedures to maintain safe operation.

After carrying out precautionary checks, the crew decided to return to Nairobi so the aircraft could undergo further technical inspection. The flight was scheduled to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 00:30 on 6 July.

Kenya Airways apologised to affected passengers and said the safety of its passengers and crew remained its highest priority. The airline said it would rebook travellers on the next available flights to their destinations.

Modern aircraft are designed with multiple backup systems, and pilots receive regular training to manage technical faults, including problems affecting spoiler systems. Returning to the departure airport is a standard safety measure that allows engineers to inspect the aircraft before it resumes service.
