Kenya Air Force chief Bernard Waliaula inducted into elite US military roll

As a major honour in the growing role of Kenya in the leadership of the world military, Major General Bernard Waliaula, the Commander of the Kenya Air Force, has just been inducted into the International Honour Roll at the famous Air University.

Taking it to their X handle on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the Kenya Defence Forces have noted that the event underscored the growing global stature of Kenya’s military leadership, owing to the fact that the honour was given by one of the most prestigious institutions of the United States Air Force.

“In an event that underscores the growing global stature of Kenya’s military leadership, Commander of the Kenya Air Force, Major General Bernard Waliaula, has been inducted into the International Honour Roll at Air University, Montgomery, which is one of the United States Air Force’s most prestigious recognitions for international graduates,” KDF said in a statement.

Major General Waliaula, the commander of the Kenya Air Force, is one of the few international leaders in the defence field who have been noted to be working towards the promotion of professional military training and enhancement of international military alliances.

Strengthening Kenya–US military cooperation

The induction is indicative of both his individual success and that of Kenya with regard to growing participation within the regional and global security systems, especially in peace support, counter-terrorism and air power modernisation activities.

The recognition is one of the highest honours that an international officer can be awarded to have been trained in the U.S. Air Force professional military education system, and Montgomery, Alabama, is the intellectual centre of the system, based in Montgomery, Alabama.

The addition of Waliaula to the International Honour Roll is likely to further strengthen the cooperation between Kenya and other air forces that are its allies, besides strengthening the focus on building highly skilled and globally competitive cadres of military leadership in Kenya.

The award comes at a time when Kenya is still striving to establish itself as a major security player in the African region, playing a role in peacekeeping operations and stability operations in the region under the continental and international systems.

Waliaula’s rise in rank

In July 2022, Major General Waliaula was promoted to his current rank and appointed Director General of Defence National Security Industries, overseeing critical defence industrial operations that support Kenya’s national security objectives. His leadership in this capacity played a pivotal role in advancing innovation, operational efficiency and self-reliance within Kenya’s defence manufacturing sector.

He has been awarded various decorations and medals, including the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), among others.

On 27 June 2025, Major General Waliaula was appointed Commander of the Kenya Air Force. In this role, he now leads the Service in safeguarding Kenya’s Airspace, driving strategic transformation and ensuring the Kenya Air Force remains a motivated, professional and technologically responsive force.
