Government terminates NGO’s Sh2b operations
The government has terminated a Sh2 billion programme by an American non-governmental organisation. The International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES) that is engaged in the country’s electoral process, has been working with the United States Agency for International Development (USaid).
IFES is said to have initiated the process of identifying and funding NGOs that will participate in election coordination, voter registration, civic education, capacity building and early conflict warning. In a letter by the NGOs Coordination Board executive director Fazul Mahamed, the organisation was accused of lacking the legal status to operate in Kenya.
“We have noted with concern that IFES has opened and is operating bank accounts in total contravention of section 12(4) of the Act, regulation 13 read together with clause 10 of terms and conditions attached to registration,” read the letter in part.
