From Medford Massachusetts to Billions: Michael Bloomberg Gives Back to Boston

Massachusetts native Michael Bloomberg is giving back to the institution that helped inspire his success. Raised in Medford, Bloomberg regularly visited Boston’s Museum of Science as a child experiences he credits with sparking his curiosity and love of learning.

Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, he has committed $155 million toward the museum’s new William and Charlotte Bloomberg Public Science Common, named after his parents. Scheduled to open October 10, 2026, the space will host immersive science programs, including robotics demonstrations and discussions about artificial intelligence, climate change and public health. The gift follows his $50 million donation in 2016.

Bloomberg made his fortune by cofounding Bloomberg L.P., a global financial-data, technology and media company best known for its Bloomberg Terminal and business news operations. He also served three terms as mayor of New York City. Forbes estimates his wealth at approximately $94.9 billion as of October 9, 2026.

His story carries a powerful message for diaspora communities: success can reach across the world, but giving back can begin with remembering the places that helped shape us.
