Family Seeks Diaspora Support to Bring Home Kenyan Scholar Who Died in Houston

The family of Gedion Rotich, a Kenyan professional who lived in the United States for nearly two decades, is appealing for financial and logistical assistance to repatriate his remains from Houston, Texas.
Mr Rotich was recently found unresponsive at his residence in Houston, where emergency responders were unable to revive him. The official cause of death has not yet been independently confirmed or publicly disclosed by authorities.
His sudden passing has left his relatives in Kenya facing the complex and expensive realities of international funeral repatriation. Because Mr Rotich had no immediate family members living in the United States, his relatives must rely entirely on diaspora networks to manage the local logistics.
Lydia Chebet Sang, his sister based in Kenya, is leading the appeal. She is asking Kenyans living in Houston and surrounding regions to help coordinate funeral home services, document processing, and transport arrangements.
Mr Rotich’s journey to the United States began in 2007, when he left his hometown of Litein in Kericho County after securing a scholarship to Grambling State University. After completing his education, he lived and worked in Arkansas before eventually settling in Houston as a permanent resident.
His death has left a heavy void at home, particularly for his 10-year-old son and his parents, who are struggling to navigate the grief and distance of losing their firstborn thousands of miles away.
Community members in Texas are currently assisting with local coordination, with family friend Mike Langat helping field inquiries in Houston.
The family has urged anyone wishing to contribute financially to verify payment arrangements directly with authorised representatives before sending funds. Ms Sang can be reached on WhatsApp at +254 724 684075, and Mr Langat can be contacted in Houston at +1469 688 4821.
