Chris Kirubi: What I Look For In Any CV

What’s the level of your desire?

I ask this because our levels of desire vary according to priority and preference. Man is more often than not attracted to the things that are fleeting and seem to pursue those with a greater urge. For instance, if you desire the best smart phone you will do all you can to get it. But what happens when you desire a job, a promotion or an investment opportunity? Do you work hard or smart enough to get it? Or do you feed your mind to think that you are not the best candidate or it’s not the right time for such progress?
Whilst we are not on this earth forever, it’s important to prioritize the things that matter or those that will help you succeed in life. The level of your desire to make the most of your life should be at the top and everything else should complement that.

Most of us are privileged to get an education, but why is it that from there everything crumbles?

How badly do you want that job? What can you do in your power (that’s right) to make sure you get an interview or HR sees your CV? How hard is it to get the attention of the business owner, employer or MD who goes to the same doctor or church as you?

As a prominent businessman, I get many requests from job seekers and persons seeking partnerships, investments and advice for their businesses/projects. Whereas I do not condemn the initiative but rather commend it, I have an issue with the majority who just cannot get it right.

You send in business proposals that contain grammatical mistakes simply because you ignored the spell check Microsoft has generously given you. In addition to that, your email contains very casual or familiar language that could mistake you for a peer.

Twitter gives you 140 characters to woo your mentor or that prominent person but the best you can do is demand for a job or use very informal language to seek for one. You may have the best qualifications or skill but your first impression appalls the recipient of the message and the best they can do is ignore you. Don’t get me wrong, friends. I am not trying to change the ‘rules’ that govern social media but help you get the best from whatever opportunity you get.

HR managers get stacks of CVs and referrals but give me a reason that will make me ask my manager to contact you. Don’t confine your elevator pitch to the elevator; spread it through the right channels if you really desire to progress. Is the lack of progress in your life due to the fact that you did not do your best or because you are busy throwing a pity party over the mistakes you have made? The choice is yours.

Desire to do more than the ordinary. Desire to be different and showcase that difference in the best way possible.

The same way a man longs for or desires his wife on their wedding night is the same way you should desire to succeed and create progress in your life. Channel all your energies to achieve what you desire and want in your life. Be a go-getter and get what you deserve. No one will hand it to you, but your level of your desire and focus will push you to accomplishing that which you have set out for yourself.
