I credit my love for song to my dad. He raised us up as singers or at least lovers of song. I recall him having us sit together some evenings and him giving us voice parts as we proceeded to sing out of the Golden Bells Hymn book.
It’s been many years since then and my love for music has blossomed into writing lyrics and playing the piano. I have found that no matter what the circumstance, no matter what time of day or what activity I’m involved in, there is always a perfect song to fit the moment. So music to me is life itself; it’s the most apt expression of deep joy or grave sorrow, wonderful delight or confounding angst.
Growing up, I sang in chorals and solos, taking lead parts as a Soprano singer. In my late teens I applied for admission to the prestigious Berklee school of Music in Boston MA but was turned down. “Not too much experience,” they said. So I kept singing and I kept writing and I kept dreaming. I was enrolled at Daystar University and I continued into my career as a News Anchor and vocal Talent for several advertising firms in Nairobi, Kenya. Music was never too far behind as I hosted a music show on Family FM, then the only Christian music station in Kenya.
At the turn of the millennium I relocated to the United States to further my Media Broadcasting career at Emerson College in Boston MA. While there I was granted an opportunity to render my writings into my debut CD, titled ‘Free.’ I sang at the Massachusetts State House for the Martin Luther King Day celebrations, I sang on the church choir and praise teams and once again I sang solos. I traveled across the United States, singing at churches, Seminars, Retreats and Youth events. I taught and led worship teams and I have also had the great honor to use this music to raise funds for various societal needs.
I am currently working on my sophomore project christened, “Consider God.” The tunes are jazzy with blues undertones while the vocals are soulful creating a balanced serene ambiance.
I am blessed to be a Christian, to have a living relationship with God and I am also blessed to be a mum to my 16 Year old son Eric Austin Njun’ge. I currently live in the United States and my contribution in this beautiful world is that I get to share in edifying people’s lives with a song that I pray draws them to one higher than themselves, God Almighty. That’s the message in the music.
