14 applicants in race for Judiciary top job

  • Only one man, David Mwaure Wahiga, applied for the Deputy Chief Justice position.

Fourteen individuals, among them two Judges of the Supreme Court and a retired Judge, have applied for the position of Chief Justice as the deadline for application came to end this week.

The position has attracted Supreme Court Judges Jackton Ojwang and Smokin Wanjala – who have submitted their application to replace Chief Justice Willy Mutunga who retired last month.

Retired Judge Aaron Ringera also threw his hat in the race for the top job at the judiciary as well as recently appointed chairperson of the Council for Legal Education Nzamba Kitonga.

Mr Kitonga is a former chairman of the Committee of Experts on Constitutional Review whose mandate ended.

Others applicants include law Professor Makau Mutua, Justice Alnashir Visram, Lady Justice Roselyne Nambuye and Justice Mbogholi Msagha.

In a statement, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said the position for Deputy Chief Justice attracted 15 applicants while that of Supreme Court Judge had 21 applicants.

“As at 5pm Friday, the Commission had received 14 applications for the position of the Chief Justice,” said JSC in a statement.

Only one man, David Mwaure Wahiga, applied for the Deputy Chief Justice position while Judges Martha Koome, Roselyne Nambuye, Pauline Nyamweya and Fatuma Sichale also applied for the Supreme Court Judge position.

The Commission will convene on Monday to review the applications for completeness and conformity with the necessary requirements within 14 days.

To allow for public participation in the recruitment process, the JSC will invite members of the public to avail, in writing, any information of interest to the Commission in relation to any of the applicants.
