Youth group in Thika designs phone application- Najua, that helps residents report crime

In a bid to offer a solution to the myriad of security challenges facing the country, a group of Information Technology (IT) specialists under the banner of Optimax Solutions and Consultancy has developed a mobile platform called Najua where Kenyans can give confidential information about terrorism, corruption and other forms of crime to the relevant authorities.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Gichuhi Ndirangu – the team leader of the Najua project – says the mobile application is designed to work like Whatsapp although it has more elaborate features that makes it different, more secure and confidential.

The Najua app is divided into various types of crime where the user needs to choose the type of crime they want to report such as robbery, corruption and terror.

case of crime, the user needs to take a picture, describe the type of crime, the location where it is taking place and send it to the number or codes that the police service will have given. The message is then copied to the Inspector General of Police, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government and other related security organs which will be connected to the server. For instance, an OCPD in Thika will have the server which he will be able to monitor what is happening in his area and respond. The app for police dubbed Karao, will have the police numbers and the location the officer is working. Once the message is received in the station it will be easier for the OCPD to assign an officer depending on their areas of service. The app can record video, audio and still pictures. Once the information is shared, the app sends back the code like M-Pesa that shows you whether the message has been received and also the time and date received. All one needs to do is to download Najua mobile app and then send the crucial information to relevant authorities.Among those who have been earmarked to directly receive the messages are Interior Cabinet Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, Director General of National Intelligence Service, the chairman and CEO of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and County police commanders among others.
