US Undersecretary of Commerce urges KQ to start direct flights to Washington DC

United States Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade, Gilbert Kaplan has given thumbs up for Kenya’s readiness for the inaugural direct Nairobi-New York flight slated for October.

Kaplan commended that Kenya Airways to start direct flights to Washington DC soon after the inaugural New York route.

“Kenya Airways non-stop flight will make it easier for businesses and tourism to flow. I acknowledge how hard KQ and the Kenyan government have worked with the assistance from US bodies to make this possible,” says Kaplan.

Kaplan is leading a 60 person delegation consisting of the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa, senior U.S. Government officials and business executives to Kenya for trade engagements till Friday.

“When the council sat down to decide what countries to go to, Kenya was at the very top of the list due to its tremendous opportunities and the US Government wants to help make more companies aware of opportunities in Kenya in all sectors.”

KQ will operate Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet including the 787-8 on the route covering 7,367miles.

Former President Barack Obama is also expected in the country on July 16th. His one-day visit will see him head to his hometown of K’ogelo before proceeding to South Africa where he will give a speech in honor of the late Nelson Mandela.
