Uhuru to meet Jubilee Party aspirants, launch membership smart card

By SIMON NDONGA, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 13 – President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Friday meet Jubilee aspirants from various parts of the country ahead of Monday’s voter registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

According to the Jubilee Party Head of Secretariat Raphael Tuju, the meeting that will also be attended by Deputy President William Ruto will be used to launch a smart card for members ahead of party nominations.

Overview
  • According to the Jubilee Party Head of Secretariat Raphael Tuju, the meeting that will also be attended by Deputy President William Ruto will be used to launch a smart card for members ahead of party nominations.
  • He said those invited to the meeting were “all Jubilee affiliated Governors, Senators, MPs, MCAs, registered and paid up Jubilee aspirants and all interim county party officials.”

“All county interim secretaries are required to contact Mr Albert Memusi at the party headquarters to be guided on the constituency and ward activities to their respective counties,” a notice issued by Tuju on Tuesday said.

He said those invited to the meeting were “all Jubilee affiliated Governors, Senators, MPs, MCAs, registered and paid up Jubilee aspirants and all interim county party officials.”

The smart card to be launched Friday has a unique bar code that is machine verifiable and captures a member’s name, national identity card number and telephone number.

Tuju said that they will embark on a countrywide mass recruitment of members after the meeting as part of measures to consolidate their support base.

Once a member gets the card, they will send their name, identity card number, mobile number and the unique card number on its surface, thereby activating it at the headquarters database.

The text will be sent to 30553 for free but to acquire the card, one will be required to pay Sh20.

The party will then be able to access the number of members and their spread across the country by nomination day.

This smart card will then be used to access polling stations by party members, where it will be verified by scanning and thereafter authenticated using a smart phone by polling agents for one to vote.

Once the card has been used to vote, it cannot be reused for that particular poll since a second verification and authentication will be flagged down by party headquarters.
