Thinking of Joining the US Army? Kenyan Recruiter Shares What You Need to Know

Staff Sergeant Shikuh Kimani, a Kenyan-born US Army recruiter based in Tukwila, Washington, is helping members of the Kenyan diaspora understand the enlistment process and pursue military careers in the United States.

Kimani works at the US Military Career Centre at Southcenter Mall, where she advises prospective recruits on the requirements for joining the US Army. She explains eligibility rules, career options and each stage of the application process before candidates can begin military service.

To qualify for enlistment, applicants must be between 17 and 42 years old, be either US citizens or permanent residents, meet physical fitness requirements and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Recruiters such as Kimani help applicants understand these requirements and prepare for the recruitment process.

For many members of the Kenyan diaspora, joining the US Army can seem unfamiliar and challenging. Kimani’s experience as both a Kenyan-born soldier and a US Army recruiter allows her to provide practical guidance while helping recruits navigate a different military system.

Her role extends beyond explaining procedures. She also offers support and encouragement to prospective recruits, drawing on her own experience of adapting to life in the United States.
