Ruto Pledges Stronger Support for Kenyans in Diaspora at State House Meeting
President William Ruto on Thursday met diaspora representatives from 40 countries at State House, Nairobi, where he pledged stronger government support for Kenyans living abroad and outlined measures to improve access to services and overseas employment opportunities.
The President described Kenyans abroad as ambassadors who represent the country’s resilience and reputation internationally. He said the government was expanding digital platforms to strengthen links between the diaspora and Kenya.
Ruto said the Boma Yangu portal now allows Kenyans living abroad to buy homes under the Affordable Housing Programme without travelling back to Kenya. He also said the Social Health Authority enables diaspora members to pay medical insurance premiums directly to support their families at home.
The President said more than 500,000 Kenyans had secured jobs abroad over the past three years. He attributed this to reforms aimed at improving recruitment processes and eliminating fraudulent practices in the sector.
“This is a direct result of our reforms to streamline the sector, restore integrity, and rid it of fraudulent actors who for too long exploited the ambitions of our people,” he said.
The meeting brought together diaspora leaders from four continents and highlighted the government’s recognition of Kenyans abroad as an important development partner. Diaspora remittances remain one of Kenya’s largest sources of foreign exchange, while investments from Kenyans abroad continue to support sectors including housing and healthcare.
The government said it aims to strengthen these connections by formalising support systems and integrating diaspora contributions into national development plans. Ruto thanked the representatives for their continued commitment, saying their remittances, investments and advocacy contribute to Kenya’s international standing.
