Presidential Candidate Dr Ekuru Aukot DeclaresHimself the Official Opposition Leader
Thirdway Alliance presidential contender Dr. Ekuru Aukot has declared himself the official opposition leader following the announcement of President Uhuru as the winner of the October 26th repeat presidential election.
In a statement on his Twitter account on Monday evening, Dr Aukot, who trailed both President Uhuru and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga in the race for state house, vowed to put the government on its toes.
“Today we take our role as the official opposition and to President @UKenyatta congratulations, we shall put your government into check,” tweeted Aukot.
Official results announced by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) placed President Uhuru ahead with 7,483,895 votes, Raila second with 73,228 votes. The former Prime Minister had withdrawn from the race, although IEBC did not strike out his name from the ballot.
Dr Aukot was third with 21,333, followed by Abduba Dida (14,107), Japheth Kaluyu (8,261) , Michael Wainaina (6,007), Joseph Nyagah (5,554) and Cyrus Jirongo (3,832).
Aukot conceded defeat to President Uhuru and promised to fight to mount another challenge for the top seat in the future.
“While we might have come a distant third, we will play an effective opposition role now that the other outfit abandoned the role,” said Dr Aukot in his concession speech moments after President Uhuru was announced the winner.
