Nobert Matara: Kenyan Man in Delaware Pleads Guilty to Murder of Tracy Nyariki

A Delaware man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Tracy Nyariki.

On 29 April 2026, the Delaware Department of Justice confirmed that 33-year-old Nobert Matara admitted responsibility for the fatal attack, which took place in December 2024. Nyariki’s disappearance had led to a prolonged investigation involving authorities in Delaware and neighbouring Maryland.

Police were first alerted on 20 December 2024, when Nyariki did not report to work. Officers from New Castle County Police attended her apartment complex in Newark, and a missing person alert was issued after she could not be found.

Investigators soon identified Matara as a suspect and traced him to Aberdeen, Maryland. Evidence recovered from his vehicle played a key role in establishing the sequence of events at Nyariki’s home.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings described the case as deeply troubling and acknowledged the efforts of investigators. She said the outcome may offer some comfort to Nyariki’s family after a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Police Chief James Leonard III also commended the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and prosecutors, noting its importance in securing the guilty plea.
