Mystery Deaths of 11 Cats and Dogs Spark Poisoning Fears in Utawala Estate

Residents of Haven Court Estate in Utawala are calling for an investigation after at least eleven cats and dogs died under unexplained circumstances in recent weeks, with many suspecting the animals were deliberately poisoned.

The deaths have left many families grieving, with residents describing their pets as valued members of their households. Emotional scenes have unfolded across the estate as owners buried animals that had lived with their families for years.

Residents say several of the animals showed similar symptoms before they died, including bleeding from the mouth or nose. Many believe the signs are consistent with poisoning. They have ruled out a disease outbreak, noting that most of the affected pets had been vaccinated and were healthy before their sudden deaths.

Hannah Mbui said she was devastated after her five-year-old cat, Roxy, disappeared and was later found dead. She said the cat had shown no signs of illness before it went missing. Mbui described Roxy as a member of the family and condemned whoever may have been responsible, saying the incident had caused deep emotional pain.

Carol Nafula said pet owners in the estate take proper care of their animals by ensuring they are vaccinated and well looked after. She expressed concern that the suspected poison could also pose a risk to children who play outside. Nafula called for investigations to determine what substance was used and who was responsible.

Residents also said their pets provided security by guarding homes and helping control pests. They said the losses had affected families both emotionally and practically. Nafula added that her children had struggled to come to terms with the death of their pet.

Another resident said the number of healthy animals dying with similar symptoms suggested deliberate poisoning rather than natural causes. The resident added that most of the affected pets had left the estate before they became ill and died.

The community is now urging animal welfare organisations and security agencies to investigate the deaths. Residents say they want those responsible to be identified and measures taken to prevent further incidents.
