Melbourne’s Kenyan Community Mourns the Loss of Josef Otieno Auma Oduwo

The Kenyan community in Melbourne is mourning the death of Josef Otieno Auma Oduwo, who died peacefully in his sleep on 27 May 2026 following a brief illness.

His death has been felt across Australia and Kenya, where he was widely respected for his humility, generosity and commitment to family and community. Friends, relatives and colleagues have paid tribute to a man they describe as compassionate, dependable and dedicated to helping others.

Josef is survived by his daughter, Ah-Reum Auma Choi Oduwo, whom he shared with Sunjae Choi. He is also survived by his parents, Eng. George Oduwo Nyangasi and Dr. Rispah Oduwo, and his siblings, Elizabeth Akoth Oduwo, Dr. Paul Nyangasi Oduwo and Dr. Noah Akala Oduwo.

Family members remember him as a devoted father, son, brother and friend whose kindness and warmth had a lasting impact on those around him. Many who knew him have spoken of his ability to bring people together and offer support whenever it was needed.

Tributes from friends and colleagues have highlighted both his professional integrity and personal character. They recalled his leadership, generosity and humility, qualities that earned him respect within the Kenyan diaspora and the wider community. Many also noted his efforts to strengthen connections between Kenyan and Australian communities.

A memorial service celebrating Josef’s life will be held on Saturday, 13 June 2026, at The Chapel of St Luke, Melbourne Girls Grammar. Guests are expected to arrive from 1.30 p.m., with the service beginning at 2.00 p.m. A wake will follow the ceremony.

The family has confirmed that arrangements are being made to repatriate his remains to Kenya. He will be laid to rest in Seme, Kisumu County, with details of the burial and final rites to be announced at a later date.
