Lost or Expired Green Card? Here’s How to Return to the US Without Travel Disruptions
US lawful permanent residents are facing increased scrutiny when returning to the country, with some reportedly being denied entry after lengthy periods abroad.
Lawful permanent residents remain subject to specific immigration requirements despite holding permanent resident status. While a valid Form I-551, commonly known as a green card, is generally sufficient for re-entry after trips lasting less than 12 months, travellers are being advised to carry the physical document at all times.
Lost or Stolen Green Cards Abroad
Permanent residents who lose their green card while overseas can apply for a Transportation Boarding Foil to facilitate their return to the United States. The process requires the submission of Form I-131A, payment of the required fee online, a valid passport, and evidence of permanent resident status, such as a copy of the green card or an I-551 stamp.
Applicants must also provide supporting documents, including photographs and, where applicable, a police report. If approved, the foil is placed in the traveller’s passport and is valid for 30 days, allowing them to board a flight and seek entry to the United States.
Role of Form I-131A
Form I-131A provides a means for permanent residents to return to the United States when they are unable to present the necessary travel documents. It can be used in cases involving lost or stolen green cards, re-entry permits and certain employment authorisation documents that include travel endorsements. The form allows individuals to demonstrate their status and obtain permission to travel back to the country.
Extended Absences and Re-entry Permits
Additional requirements apply when a permanent resident remains outside the United States for more than one year. In such cases, a green card alone is not sufficient for re-entry. Individuals planning an extended absence are advised to obtain a re-entry permit before leaving the country.
These permits are typically valid for up to two years and indicate that the holder has not abandoned their US residence. Travellers who do not have the required documentation may face questions about whether they have relinquished their permanent resident status.
Immigration specialists note that permanent residency can be affected by failures to meet procedural requirements, particularly after lengthy periods abroad. As a result, maintaining proper documentation, including possession of a physical green card, has become increasingly important for residents travelling internationally.
