Kenya’s Parliament Enforces Dress Code Regulations, Restricts Kaunda Suits Within Premises

Nairobi, Kenya – November 29, 2023 – In a recent decree, Kenya’s Parliament has implemented a dress code policy that explicitly restricts the wearing of Kaunda suits, named after the late Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, within its precincts.

The decision was announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Moses Wetangula, who emphasized that both Kaunda suits and traditional African attire would no longer be permissible within the parliamentary premises.

The Kaunda suit, characterized by a safari jacket paired with matching trousers, has gained prominence among political figures, notably seen worn by Kenyan President William Ruto during official engagements.

The attire, inspired by the late Zambian president’s iconic fashion choice, typically features a short-sleeved design and is commonly worn without a tie. President Ruto often accessorizes it with a short upturned collar, showcasing its adaptation among the political elite.

Speaker Wetangula defended the ban citing emerging fashion trends that posed a challenge to the established parliamentary dress code. He reiterated the mandated dress code for men, emphasizing the necessity of a coat, collar, tie, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, shoes, or service uniform. For women, the guideline highlights business, formal, or smart casual wear, underscoring specific regulations on skirt length and blouse styles.

While acknowledging the past tolerance of the Kaunda suits within the parliamentary premises, Speaker Wetangula emphasized the urgency to cease this practice, citing an imminent threat to the established dress code.

The attire’s recent surge in popularity, especially after President Ruto’s recurrent appearances in the Kaunda suit during official functions, led to its visibility on social media platforms in Kenya.

The imposition of the ban has triggered a spectrum of reactions on social media, with some expressing confusion over the restriction of African attire within an African parliament, while others voiced support for the enforcement of a stricter dress code.
