Kenyans in Australia Pay Tribute to Student Who Died Days Before Graduation

The Kenyan community in Australia is mourning the death of June Chebet Kili, a student at the University of Newcastle who died on Sunday, 1 June 2026, just weeks before her scheduled graduation.

Chebet had been receiving treatment at Calvary Mater Hospital in New South Wales. She was due to graduate from the University of Newcastle on 26 June 2026, marking the completion of a journey that began when she moved to Australia in 2024 to pursue higher education.

She was the daughter of George and Brenda Kili of Kaboi, Eldoret. Following her death, a memorial service was held at New Vine Church in Maryland, NSW, where members of the Kenyan community gathered to pay tribute to her life and support her family.

In the days after the memorial, members of the community continued to meet at a residence in Wallsend, NSW, for evening prayers and to stand in solidarity with the bereaved family. The gatherings reflected the close ties within the Kenyan diaspora and its support for families facing loss.

The family is also mourning another recent tragedy. Two years ago, they lost their son Rodney Kili, a young farmer who worked to promote agricultural production at Komool Farm and Buffalo Mfalme Millers. The loss of two children within a short period has left the family facing profound grief.
