Kenyan Mother Succumbs to Illness in SaudiArabia After Viral Appeal
The untimely death of Lucy Nyambura in Saudi Arabia has sparked an outpouring of grief and calls for action.
The mother of three had journeyed to Saudi Arabia with aspirations of securing a brighter future for her children. Tragically, her hopes were dashed when she fell gravely ill. A poignant video that circulated widely on social media captured Nyambura’s desperate plea for assistance to return to Kenya for medical treatment. Despite the video’s viral spread and numerous efforts to help, aid did not arrive in time. On September 10, 2024, Nyambura succumbed to her illness at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Dammam.
The news of Nyambura’s death was shared by Kiamwangi ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kung’u Wanjiku Smart, who expressed heartfelt condolences to her family. Smart regrets that her quest for better opportunities to support her children had ultimately led to their permanent separation. In the wake of this tragedy, Nyambura’s family is now faced with the arduous task of repatriating her remains to Kenya for a proper burial. This situation has garnered significant attention on social media, with many offering condolences and support to the grieving family.
“I have not been able to gather the courage to post this after we tried to engage the Embassy to assist us in bringing Lucy Nyambura back home. The information is, unfortunately, no good news. Lucy passed away on 10/09/2024 at 9.30 am at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Dammam.” the MCA shared.
Another Kenyan woman Winnie Kwamboka who had traveled to Saudi Arabia in 2020, also met an untimely death under unclear circumstances. Kwamboka’s family in Kisii had been anticipating her return in early September 2024, only to receive the devastating news of her passing. Like Nyambura’s family, they now face the financial burden of repatriating her body. The incidents have prompted urgent calls for the Kenyan government to implement more robust measures to safeguard its citizens working abroad and ensure their safe return when necessary.
Recent years have seen numerous reports of Kenyan workers facing mistreatment in Saudi Arabia. Human rights organizations have advocated for stricter regulations and improved monitoring of recruitment agencies to prevent exploitation and abuse. There are also growing calls for the Kenyan government to establish more comprehensive support systems for migrant workers, including legal assistance, healthcare access, and emergency repatriation services.
