Kenyan Diaspora in the UK Strengthens Cultural Identity Through Ngemi Cia

Ngemi Cia UK will hold the second edition of its Homecoming Festival on 29 August at Wildflower Events Field in Kenilworth, bringing together Kenyans from across Britain for a celebration of culture, music, food and community.

For many Kenyans living in the United Kingdom, migration involves more than finding work and settling into a new country. It can also mean becoming more distant from the languages, customs and traditions that shape their identity. In response, community organisations have created initiatives that help preserve Kenyan culture while adapting it to life abroad.

Ngemi Cia UK is one such organisation. The group promotes Kikuyu culture and the wider Kenyan identity through music, food, storytelling and shared experiences.

Rather than relying on formal lessons, it encourages people to take part in cultural activities that help younger generations learn about their heritage while allowing older members of the community to maintain strong connections with home.

The Homecoming Festival is the organisation’s main annual event. This year’s programme includes performances by Samidoh, Deejay Dibul, Wanja Asali, Steve Rogers, Njugush, Mcee Jessy and Muringi Matheri, combining traditional performances with contemporary music and comedy.

Beyond entertainment, the festival provides an opportunity for members of the Kenyan diaspora to meet, strengthen community ties and celebrate their shared heritage. It also creates a space where different generations can connect through familiar music, food and cultural traditions.

Ngemi Cia UK also reflects the changing role of diaspora organisations. In addition to promoting culture, the group recognises community achievements and supports initiatives in education and healthcare in both the United Kingdom and Kenya. This broader focus shows how diaspora organisations are increasingly combining cultural activities with practical support for their communities
