Kenya Moves to Strengthen Credential Checks for Citizens Seeking Jobs Overseas

Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs is working with DataFlow Group and the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA) to strengthen credential verification and improve protections for Kenyans seeking employment abroad.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting led by Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu with senior representatives from both organisations. The talks focused on using technology to support safer and more structured labour migration by improving the verification of professional qualifications and employment contracts.

The department said stronger credential verification could reduce the use of fraudulent documents and help protect workers from unethical recruitment practices. Digital credentialing would also allow employers to confirm applicants’ qualifications more easily, while giving Kenyan workers a recognised way to present their skills in international labour markets.

The discussions also examined ways to connect Kenyan jobseekers directly with vetted employers. Officials said this would improve transparency in the recruitment process by reducing reliance on unverified intermediaries and ensuring that overseas job opportunities meet established labour mobility standards.

Ambassador Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Diaspora Investments, Skills and Entrepreneurship, attended the meeting alongside senior departmental officials Anne Mruche and Nikki Matika. Their participation reflected the department’s aim of linking labour migration with skills development, entrepreneurship and diaspora investment.

The department views international employment as part of a broader strategy to support economic growth and professional development, alongside the benefits of remittances. Officials said this approach would help ensure that labour mobility contributes to Kenya’s long-term development objectives.

The engagement with DataFlow Group and WCEA forms part of the department’s wider efforts to modernise labour migration through technology and international partnerships. The focus on digital systems, credential verification and employer transparency is intended to create a more reliable and accountable framework for overseas employment.
