Kenya airways suspends flights to two African capitals as part of restructuring

Kenya Airways has suspended flights to two major African capitals as part of its restructuring efforts.

The airline will not be flying to Nigeria’s administrative capital Abuja and Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone; with effect from November 15. The new move is seen as part of an intra-Africa campaign targeted at leisure travellers on the continent.

“As we go into the winter season (starting October 30) we have made changes to our flight schedule with the aim of strengthening our network in Africa and more importantly optimizing our services to selected destinations in response to passenger demands,” Kenya Airways CEO Mbuvi Ngunze said.

We are constantly relooking at our schedule to ensure we offer our guest reliable connectivity through our hub, Nairobi. I am happy to affirm that the improved connectivity over the summer season has seen intra Africa traffic increase by 14 per cent.

The airline will however increase its flights within the east African region. Kenya Airways serves over 40 African cities. Intra-continent travel accounted for 60% of their turnover as at the year ending March 2016.

The airline also announced increased flights to Asia, with flights to Dubai and Mumbai to be increased to twice daily. News recently indicated that government officials had been directed to patronize the airline when travelling.
