Inside the Phone Theft Cases Haunting Kitui MCA Cyrus Musyoka

Three reported mobile phone theft incidents in Nairobi’s Central Business District have led to the latest arrest of Kitui MCA Cyrus Kisavi Musyoka, renewing scrutiny of earlier investigations involving missing phone consignments and a separate case over mobile accessories.

Musyoka, the elected representative for Ikanga/Kyatune Ward, was arrested along Mfangano Street on Friday, October 23, 2026. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives had been investigating incidents reported in August and September and used CCTV footage to identify him.

The latest allegations remain under investigation. The DCI has not publicly detailed the circumstances of each incident, the number of phones allegedly stolen or their value. However, CCTV footage has also featured in previous investigations involving Musyoka, including a 2025 case in which a courier company reported the disappearance of mobile phone accessories worth approximately Sh1.9 million.

The Buscar Courier Services investigation

On June 5, 2025, the DCI announced that Musyoka had been arrested in Nairobi over the alleged theft of assorted mobile accessories from Buscar Courier Services along River Road. The company had reported the consignment missing on February 8, 2025. The parcel was intended for delivery to a client in Mombasa.

According to the DCI, investigators analysed CCTV footage that showed a suspect leaving the premises with the parcel. Security personnel at the courier offices later detained Musyoka when he appeared there, before handing him over to police.

The agency said investigators had positively identified him through the footage. The allegation nevertheless remained a matter for the judicial process rather than a conclusion that could be drawn from the recording alone.

The 2024 mobile phone consignment

An earlier incident involved phones valued at Sh347,730 at the parcel office of Kinatwa Prestige Matatu Sacco near Afya Centre in Nairobi. According to earlier reporting, investigators suspected that details on a parcel destined for a client in Matuu, Machakos County, had been altered to enable someone else to collect it.

Musyoka was reportedly confronted by members of the public over suspected theft and rescued by police. He was taken to MSF Hospital along Juja Road, where he identified himself as Daniel Mulei Mathina. A police officer involved in the rescue reportedly recognised him from a previous encounter associated with the Makadara Law Courts.

Musyoka was subsequently charged alongside three other people in connection with the alleged theft and released on Sh40,000 cash bail. He later failed to attend court, according to earlier accounts, prompting the issuance of a warrant on November 25, 2024. The DCI referred to that outstanding warrant when announcing his latest arrest, identifying the case as Criminal Case No. 112/303/2024.

Musyoka also pleaded not guilty in February 2025 to separate charges concerning an alleged Sh2.212 million motor vehicle reimbursement claim involving the Kitui County Assembly. He was being held following the October 23 arrest as detectives prepared for his expected court appearance.
