How US-Based Lovince Mckenzie Is Elevating Kenya’s Global Music Identity

Lovince Mckenzie is expanding his international profile with a growing catalogue of music, led by the success of Light Up and the release of his latest single, On My Way, as he continues to promote Kenyan music on the global stage.

Mckenzie’s progress has been built through a consistent approach to music rather than a single breakthrough moment. Since 2020, he has released songs that combine Swahili lyrics, East African melodies and contemporary production with Afro-house influences.

Tracks including My Happy Place, Feel Your Vibe, Home and Vigelegele reflect his focus on storytelling and rhythm while maintaining a distinctly Kenyan sound with international appeal. A major milestone came with Light Up, his collaboration with Nigerian artist Ayo Maff.

Released through CiDAR Africa and distributed by Empire, the song became his most successful commercial release. It has recorded more than 5.7 million streams on Spotify and inspired over 205,000 user-generated videos on TikTok.

The track combined Kenyan musical influences with Nigeria’s Afrobeats style without moving away from Mckenzie’s East African identity. It also established him as part of a wider African music movement while preserving his own artistic direction.

His latest single, On My Way, marks another step in his musical development. Unlike Light Up, which leaned towards Afrobeats, the new release explores Afro-house and melodic dance music. It combines electronic production with Swahili themes centred on love and connection.

Mckenzie describes the style as “East Afropiano”, blending elements of South African Amapiano, West African rhythms and East African storytelling. The sound is intended to appeal across streaming platforms, live performances and international audiences.

Mckenzie’s work also extends beyond music. He is collaborating with Hollywood actress and producer Nicole Murphy on a documentary filmed in Kenya. The project aims to highlight the country’s landscapes, culture and creative industries for international audiences.

Through the documentary, he seeks to present Kenya as a destination for creative talent as well as a source of successful artists. The wider significance of this approach reflects the challenges Kenyan musicians have faced in reaching global audiences. Many have competed with the stronger industry infrastructure and investment available in countries such as Nigeria and South Africa.

Mckenzie has focused on meeting international production standards while maintaining the musical identity rooted in his Kenyan background. He has also positioned his career as part of a broader effort to promote Kenya’s cultural presence internationally.

Whether On My Way matches or exceeds the commercial performance of Light Up remains to be seen. However, Mckenzie’s career is increasingly defined by a steadily growing catalogue, an evolving musical style and a long-term strategy to expand the international reach of Kenyan music. His work demonstrates that Kenyan artists can succeed globally while preserving their own distinct identity.
