How Persistence Paid Off for Kenyan-American Samuel Mwangi in Minnesota Elections

A persistent political journey culminated in victory for Kenyan-born politician Samuel Mwangi, who won a seat on the Champlin City Council in Minnesota after two previously unsuccessful attempts.

According to results released by the Minnesota Secretary of State following elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mwangi garnered 1,178 votes, representing 41.30 per cent of the total ballots cast. He defeated Lorraine Coan, who came second with 990 votes.

Ryan Reider placed third with 393 votes, while Charles Boakai received 273 votes. A further 18 ballots were recorded as write-in votes, accounting for 0.63 per cent of the total.

The win comes after Mwangi launched failed bids for the same municipal position in 2020 and 2024. Before entering elective politics, he served on Champlin’s Environmental Resources Commission from 2021 and participated in community development projects. He is also a former Executive Director of the Global Fatherhood Foundation, an organisation that promotes responsible fatherhood and supports families.

Mwangi’s term will begin in January 2027 and run until December 31, 2028. The city council is expected to announce a specific date for his official swearing-in ceremony.

His election grants him a direct role in shaping decisions affecting Champlin residents, including local infrastructure development, public services, and community planning.

Mwangi was among several Kenyan-born politicians contesting municipal and state positions in the US mid-term elections. In another outcome, Huldah Momanyi secured re-election to the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Momanyi retained her seat with 9,852 votes against her challenger, Kistler, who received 3,840 votes. She first made history in 2024 as the first Kenyan-American elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives.

However, Victor Jumah lost his bid for the Ramsey City Council Ward 3 seat. Jumah gathered 1,194 votes, falling behind Dan Specht, who secured the seat with 2,141 votes.

These local contests took place alongside the national mid-term elections, which determined the balance of power in the US Congress. Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
