Gachagua Urges Kenyan Diaspora to Go Beyond Remittances
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped up his engagement with Kenyans in the United States, arriving in Spokane, Washington, as part of a 50-day tour of several states.
In Spokane, Gachagua was welcomed by supporters and members of the Kenyan community. He praised their resilience and their continued support for families in Kenya.
Gachagua highlighted the importance of diaspora remittances to Kenya’s economy, noting that they have surpassed traditional foreign exchange earners such as tea and coffee. For many households, the money sent home helps pay school fees, support businesses and meet daily expenses.
He also urged Kenyans living abroad to take a more active role in demanding accountability from leaders in Nairobi. He said those who make a significant contribution to the country’s finances should also call for transparency in the management of public resources.
The message formed part of the wider purpose of his US tour. Gachagua said his meetings were intended to explore how Kenyans abroad could contribute more directly to national development through investment, professional networks and civic participation.
He argued that the diaspora’s role should extend beyond providing financial support through remittances. In his view, Kenyans abroad should also have a greater influence on policy and national development priorities.
Kenyan communities across the United States have expanded their presence through businesses, professional associations and investment networks that maintain links with Kenya. Their influence has grown beyond the economic sphere to include discussions about the country’s political future.
Gachagua emphasised that Kenyans abroad have a role in shaping Kenya’s direction and should not be viewed solely as sources of financial support.
