Crisis as SportPesa cancels all local sports sponsorships

Betting firm SportPesa has canceled all local sports sponsorship immediately in response to implementation of 35 per cent tax on all gambling revenues. This includes sponsorships in football, rugby and boxing to the tune of 600 million Kenya Shillings a year. SportPesa had last Thursday threatened to pull out of sports sponsorship in Kenya after High Court judge John Mativo dismissed a case filed by betting firms challenging new regulations passed by Parliament to control gambling. Our reporter Sean Cardovillis spoke to SportPesa CEO Ronald Kaurauri shortly after he announced the withdrawal.
