Construction of Kenol-Nyeri-Isiolo DualCarriageway to Begin in June
Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says the construction of the Kenol-Nyeri-Isiolo highway into a dual carriageway will begin in June, 2019.
Macharia says the mega-project is at the design stage and the tendering process will begin soon ahead of official commissioning by President Kenyatta in June.
“The project is at the design stage. We are done with the Kenol–Nyeri stretch and are working on the stretch to Isiolo,” says Macharia.
The main aim of the dual carriageway is to open up the Northern Corridor and connecting the coast to northern Kenya and Ethiopia.
The multi-billion-shilling infrastructure will pass through at least seven counties including Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia and Isiolo among others.
“Looking at the project, it will cut through at least six or seven counties and that will be a major boost to the region. This is a priority project for the government,” Macharia says.
“The actual cost will be determined once we do bidding. That will be around mid this year.”
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has already marked out the road and has begun clearing out structures set up on the proposed highway.
