We are excited to announce the 14th annual African Economic Forum (AEF) at Columbia University. We look forward to having you join us and our distinguished speakers while we explore this year’s theme— Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers: Harnessing the Power of an Open Africa.
This year’s conference will build upon last year’s theme of A Continent Connecting: Solutions from Within, providing an opportunity for fresh views and further discussion of initiatives for growth within the African continent and in relation to the rest of the world.
The 2017 theme touches on many issues including development, investment, and technology. Our goal for this year’s conference is to highlight the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead as African countries continue to present themselves as “open for business.” This year’s forum will provide a platform to evaluate the ways in which collaboration in an era of technological transformation, integration, and innovation can bridge the development gap and fuel growth in Africa.
By exploring these issues, we aim to expose the meaningful ways in which African actors have increasingly begun to look outwards and consider alternative options. By bringing together a broad range of panelists and insightful keynote speakers, AEF will continue to be a platform for meaningful engagement. We hope to stimulate fresh approaches to tackling ongoing and emerging challenges faced by a modernizing Africa.
The Women in Business panel brings together accomplished women in corporate, entrepreneurial and tech sectors to discuss their career paths, and how they have become leaders and succeeded in traditionally male dominated spaces. Panelists will share insights into the unique opportunities and challenges they have faced, and provide advice for empowering a new generation of African female leaders in this rapidly growing global economy.
Don’t miss these impressive women speaking at our Women in Business Panel on Saturday!

Breaking barriers to harness the power of an open Africa requires supportive legal frameworks. To achieve this, African legal practitioners, scholars and policymakers need to evaluate the efficacy of the current legal frameworks on the continent. In the context of the current climate of continued infrastructure investment, burgeoning digitization and industrialization in Africa, this panel will analyze the impact of laws toward achieving sustainable economic growth, discuss possible legislative strategies and solutions and explore the role of African legal transaction markets in developing strong legal frameworks and institutions.
Make sure to catch the Strengthening Africa’s Legal Frameworks Panel on Saturday!
