A man holds onto a Kenyan girl as he brings her back to her family home, about 50 miles outside Marigat, in Baringo County, Kenya, Dec. 7, 2014. She had tried to escape after realizing she was to be married. As Pokot tradition dictates, the future husband arrived at the family home with a group of men to collect the girl.

Christian Attorneys In Africa Fight to Stop Sexual Slavery and Child Marriage In Kenya
The East African Centre for Law and Justice (EACLJ), an affiliate of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), is working to end violations happening to girls as young as ten years old in Samburu County in Northern Kenya. CeCe Heil, executive counsel with the ACLJ, says the child brides often face rape and even mutilation.
“Even though Kenya has strict laws in place making all these things illegal in protecting these little girls, unfortunately, a lot of the perpetrators never are turned in or never brought to court and brought to justice,” Heil laments.
She explains that during the past year, ACLJ and EACLJ lawyers have fought to bring awareness and justice.
“This is a great opportunity for the EACLJ to step in and start bringing these cases to court, and we’ve been successful,” the attorney reports. “So we’re hoping to continue that, and then hopefully, when there are actually detrimental consequences to these actions … we can bring an end to this.”
