Canada Citizenship 2026: What Kenyans Must Know About the New Online Test
Canada has set out the framework for its online citizenship test, which is now a key requirement for permanent residents applying for citizenship, including many Kenyans.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed the test requirements, eligibility rules and application process. The online citizenship test is compulsory for applicants aged 18 to 54. It contains 20 multiple-choice and true-or-false questions covering Canadian history, government, geography, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
Applicants must score at least 75 per cent to pass. The test is completed through a secure online portal that uses webcam monitoring and anti-cheating technology. All questions are based on the official study guide, Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship.
Kenyans applying for Canadian citizenship must first meet the country’s residency and tax requirements. Applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the five years before applying.
They must also have filed tax returns for three of those years. After an application receives approval in principle, IRCC sends an email invitation with instructions and gives applicants 21 days to complete the test.
Those who pass move to the final stage of the process by taking the Oath of Citizenship, either online or in person. The full citizenship process currently takes between 11 and 24 months.
Language requirements are generally less challenging for Kenyan applicants because English is an official language in both Kenya and Canada. However, IRCC has warned applicants against using fraudulent services that claim to guarantee a pass. The department says anyone found breaking the rules could have their application refused and face a five-year ban on reapplying.
The official study materials are available free of charge through the government’s website. The announcement comes as Canada’s immigration system continues to process large numbers of citizenship and asylum applications.
In a separate development, at least 15 Kenyan nationals applied for asylum in Canada after attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While the citizenship test provides a formal route for permanent residents seeking Canadian nationality, the asylum applications reflect a different immigration process based on claims for protection.
Permanent residents seeking citizenship must meet defined legal requirements and complete the online test before taking the Oath of Citizenship. Asylum seekers, meanwhile, follow a separate process based on their individual claims and circumstances.
