AMERICA: A Diaspora reflection on Jeremiah 29 “It is not time to grieve but a time for hope and understanding.”

Jeremiah 29:11 is a well known verse and it reads:
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
For many it is a verse full of promise and hope however for some it is a promise appreciated without context. The nation of Israel had begun the 70 year Babylonian captivity. And Jeremiah says to the exiles:
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. Jeremiah 29:4-7
How does this apply to America? Pray for the prosperity of America under a Trump administration for here many live and if America prospers you too will prosper. .That is a powerful message of hope in these troubled times. If you want to know how mean the Babylonians were read Habakkuk chapter 1 and Psalms 137, where by the rivers of Babylon they mocked the exiles asking them to sing the songs of Zion.
Is the Trump presidency portend a captivity? For many that is a concern not unfounded for there have been reports of minorities and immigrants harassed by those who feel empowered by the rhetoric the candidate offered during the dirtiest and most vitriolic presidential campaigns the world has ever witnessed to oppress and persecute minorities and immigrants. And it is for that reason Jeremiah 29 becomes very relevant. The Lord says to the captives. I will prosper you in your captivity. You must pray for prosperity in your captivity. I will restore you after your captivity.
And so exiles of the American Diaspora wipe those tears put on your best clothes and engage in life reflect the words of Jeremiah and daily get confident in proclaiming those words
During the Trump administration; The Lord will prosper America and will prosper me.
I pray for the prosperity of the 99% during the Trump administration for if they prosper I prosper.
Even in your lowest moment God inspires hope. Have you forgotten Proverbs 21:1 loosely translated would be, “Trumps heart is in the hand of the Lord. As the channels of a water canal The Lord will turn will turn the direction that He pleases to water to refresh towards productivity and abundance even to the glory of God”.
That word for river used in Proverbs 21:1 here is _pheleg_ and it describes a water canal that supplies farmlands regularly and constantly as needed. This is what is captured in Proverbs 21:1 and when the Lord instructs the captives to pray for prosperity whilst in captivity in Jeremiah 29 it is informed by directly by proverbs 21:1. And the Triumphs of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and Esther (Hadassah) are examples of promotion and prosperity and favor while in Babylonian captivity.
Indeed if it be so that we live in such dire times then this generation will allow tales of the Daniels, Meshach’s, Shadrach’s, Abednego and Esther, their triumphs their victories to be told in America in this present day.
And I hope you do take a moment to read the whole of Jeremiah 29 so that you can be wary of those who tell you to sow a seed of prosperity to their ministry. Stay away from such they are ready to come out of the wood work to exploit the gullible.
Some may suppose this is delusion to proclaim hope at this time. But pause and look in the mirror and consider that many of these are distraught and hurting over a politician who can’t tell u apart from a bar of soap. Hilary was no Eva Peron (Evita), and may be the words of that famous song (Don’t Cry for me Argentina) are apt for troubled residents of America:
Dont cry for her Ameriiica!!
But all you have to do is look…to know
That every word is true
I do hope these words encourage you much and fill you with hope and to rest in what the Lord has proclaimed over your lives at this time. For those who face persecution and oppression you will rise up like Daniel and Esther and the Shadrach Meshach and Abednego and proclaim the Lord amidst strong power opposing forces. I pray the Lord will strengthen you when you face such times. Amen and Amen.
