4 university bosses’ contracts renewed, 4 others exit

The Education ministry has reappointed four vice chancellors (VCs) whose terms were ending by next month.

Following a review of performance reports from public university councils, the Education secretary Amina Mohamed renewed contracts for VCs in Technical University of Kenya, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kabianga and Maasai Mara universities.

The VCs whose terms have been renewed are: Prof Francis Aduol (TUK), Prof Stephen Agong (Jaramogi Oginga Odinga), Kabianga’s Wilson Kipng’eno and Maasai Mara University’s Mary Walingo.

Prof Francis Lelo of Laikipia University retires this month after serving for one term since he did not seek contract renewal. However, the name of the new VC has not yet been revealed.

Others who are set leave office next month are: Prof John Akama (Kisii University), Prof Teresa Akengo (University of Eldoret) and Prof Japhet Magambo (Meru University), Prof Mohamed Rajab (Pwani University).

SACKING

Last week, Ms Mohamed received performance reports from public university councils.

She disclosed that some councils had recommended the sacking of their current vice-chancellors while others wanted their vice-chancellors retained for a second term.

Ms Mohamed said the retaining of the vice chancellors has been decided based on their performance.

The exit of those who will not be re-appointed will come at a heavy cost to taxpayers as they are entitled to benefits.

The universities received their charters in 2013.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) Vice Chancellor Mabel Imbuga will be exiting in July after serving her two five-year terms.

According to the Universities Act 2012, the recruitment of vice chancellors, deputy vice chancellors and principals of constituent colleges must be done through a competitive process by respective councils that are appointed by Education Cabinet secretary.
