YouTube to remove ‘trending section’, introduces new tools for enhanced user discovery

YouTube has announced it will be permanently removing its “Trending” section from both desktop and mobile platforms.

The decision, which will be effective later this month, comes as part of a broader initiative by the platform to modernise content discovery and address long-standing criticisms of the Trending tab’s relevance and fairness.

Why the trending section is being retired

YouTube’s Trending tab, which has existed since 2015, was designed to showcase the most popular videos according to a user’s region.

However, it has often faced criticism from both creators and viewers.

Many claim it disproportionately favoured mainstream media and already-popular channels, making it harder for independent or emerging creators to gain visibility.

“After evaluating the way users engage with content and how creators grow on our platform, we’ve concluded that the Trending section no longer meets the needs of our global audience. We are introducing new tools and algorithms that provide more personalised, equitable, and fresh ways for users to discover content.” YouTube said in a statement released on Thursday.

YouTube plans to roll out a suite of new discovery tools aimed at replacing the outdated Trending model on the YouTube Charts for Trending music videos, weekly top podcast shows, and trending movie trailers.

“We’ll continue to add more content categories to charts over time. While we are building more charts, the Gaming Explore page will still be your go-to for the trending gaming videos,” it said.

Under “Explore Reimagined”: An updated version of the Explore tab will provide curated categories like “Up and Coming Creators,” “Hidden Gems,” and “Real-Time Viral,” powered by AI but overseen by human moderators for fairness and diversity.

“For You” Feed will give personalised video recommendations based on a user’s viewing history, interests, and recent interactions. Unlike the current home feed, this will include a transparent “Why am I seeing this?” option.

“Spotlight Moments” will offer a dynamic feature that highlights real-time viral trends, events, and cultural moments, giving creators and users insight into what’s capturing global attention without relying on view count alone.

And lastly, the Creator Discovery Boost: A behind-the-scenes update to YouTube’s recommendation engine to give increased visibility to new or niche creators whose content is receiving high engagement and retention, even if they have smaller subscriber counts.

“The Trending tab had become stagnant, with the same types of videos appearing daily. This change signals a shift toward more diversity and freshness in the platform’s recommendations.”
