National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has raised alarm over the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in Kenya, describing the vice as both criminal and immoral and urging citizens to unite against it.
Speaking on Saturday during an empowerment programme for women and youth groups in Kapenguria Constituency, Wetang’ula said GBV not only erodes the dignity of women but also destabilises homes and weakens the social fabric of the nation.
“Gender-based violence is not only criminal but also immoral. It erodes the dignity of women, destabilises homes and undermines the very fabric of our society. We must speak with one voice to denounce it and ensure survivors receive justice, protection, and support,” Wetang’ula said.
The Speaker also cautioned against leaders who peddle ethnic hatred and divisive politics, reminding Kenyans that the country belongs to everyone and must be safeguarded against balkanisation.
“Kenya is home for all of us. We must reject leaders who sow seeds of discord, hate, and ethnic division. Our focus must remain on peace, unity, and shared prosperity,” Wetang’ula added.
He concluded by voicing support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, citing the employment of over 100,000 teachers since Ruto assumed office as a key achievement.
Wetang’ula urged citizens to give the President a second term to complete ongoing development projects and deliver further progress across the country.
This comes as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Chairperson Gladys Wanga has issued a strong warning to anyone planning to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 General Election, saying they should prepare for a tough contest.
Speaking during an economic empowerment event in Kisumu, Wanga said Ruto’s re-election is almost guaranteed due to his growing alliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“Some people are busy plotting how to unseat Ruto, but they’re just dreaming. His partnership with Raila makes his second term highly likely,” she said.
