Veteran Red Cross Diver Dies During Nairobi River Rescue Mission

The Kenya Red Cross Society has confirmed the death of veteran aqua rescue volunteer Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who died during a recovery mission along the Nairobi River in Nairobi.

Wangila lost his life on 3 March 2026 while responding to a distress call in the Highrise area along the Mbagathi River. He had been part of a team searching for a 17-year-old Grade 9 student who was swept away by floodwaters several days earlier.

The boy reportedly lost his footing while attempting to cross the swollen river near Nyayo Highrise Estate on Mbagathi Road as he headed to football practice with a friend. Witnesses said the strong current carried him towards a nearby waterfall, where he disappeared beneath the water.

In a statement, the organisation expressed deep sorrow at Wangila’s death and described him as one of its most experienced and dependable aqua rescue volunteers.

“For over 15 years, Samuel served across the country with courage, professionalism and an extraordinary commitment to saving lives,” the statement read. “He was among our most experienced and reliable aqua rescue volunteers.”

In 2025, Wangila received a Special Recognition Award at the Volunteer Awards in recognition of his nationwide contribution to aqua rescue operations. He also mentored and trained fellow volunteers, helping to strengthen water rescue capacity across the country.

Although the exact circumstances of his death have not been disclosed, it is understood that he may have been overcome by the powerful river currents. The river has been swollen by heavy rains that began in late February. The Kenya Meteorological Department has repeatedly warned about the risks posed by swollen rivers, noting that fast-moving floodwaters can sweep away individuals within seconds.

The incident comes amid a number of flood-related cases across the country. In Narok County, two men, a driver and a passenger, remain missing after their vehicle was swept away at Mararianta Bridge, which links Transmara and Narok towns. Residents have raised concerns about the condition of the bridge, citing previous fatal accidents at the crossing.

The Kenya Red Cross Society extended its condolences to Wangila’s wife, family, friends and fellow volunteers, stating that it stands with them during the period of mourning.

“Rest in peace, Samuel. Your legacy lives on in every life you saved,” the organisation said.
