Vanna Howard Sworn In as First Cambodian American State Senator, Representing Massachusetts’ First Middlesex District

Today, Senator Vanna Howard was sworn in as State Senator for the First Middlesex District, marking a historic milestone as the first Cambodian American to serve as a State Senator in the United States. Senator Howard now represents the communities of Lowell, Dracut, Dunstable, Pepperell, and Tyngsborough on Beacon Hill.
A longtime advocate for the Greater Lowell region, Senator Howard previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where she represented the 17th Middlesex District and championed issues including education, public health, and racial equity. Her election to the Senate comes after a special election for the 1st Middlesex seat, which had been vacant since the passing of Senator Edward J. Kennedy.
Senator Howard’s swearing-in is especially significant for the Cambodian American and broader Asian American communities, many of whom see her story from surviving the Khmer Rouge genocide and resettling in Lowell, to rising as a respected public servant as a powerful testament to resilience and opportunity in Massachusetts. Her leadership is expected to further elevate the voices of immigrants, refugees, and working families across the First Middlesex District and the Commonwealth.
