US-Based JCM Pastor Quits in Protest Over Ruto Invitation

Pastor Charles Wachira has resigned as president of the United States branch of Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) in protest over the church’s decision to invite President William Ruto to its third anniversary celebrations in Kiambu County.

The JCM headquarters in Nairobi confirmed the President’s invitation, describing the event as a significant milestone for the ministry, which has expanded rapidly under the leadership of Bishop Ben Kiengei. The anniversary service, scheduled for 22 February, is promoted as a major celebration of the church’s growth, both locally and internationally.

In his resignation statement, Pastor Wachira expressed strong objections to the invitation, citing concerns over the moral implications of involving political figures in religious events. He pointed out the widespread dissatisfaction among Kenyans, particularly younger generations, who are increasingly calling for accountability and justice in response to allegations of abuse by state agencies.

Wachira argued that religious institutions must provide moral clarity during such uncertain times, and he emphasised that the church should not appear indifferent to the struggles of the wider population. Wachira stressed that spiritual leadership should be grounded in truth and the protection of innocent life, and he warned that decisions which cause division or moral discomfort among believers require a principled response.

Citing biblical teachings, he reiterated the responsibility of religious leaders to advocate for the oppressed and resist any attempts to justify wrongdoing. He clarified that his resignation was based on conviction, not rebellion, and promised to explain further at a later date.
