TikTok Removes 580,000 Videos in Kenya Over Rule Violations

TikTok has taken down more than 580,000 videos in Kenya between July and September 2025 for violating its Community Guidelines.

According to the company’s transparency report, 99.7 percent of the flagged content was removed before users could report it, with 94.6 percent taken down within 24 hours of upload. In addition, about 90,000 live sessions in Kenya were interrupted for policy breaches, representing around one percent of all live streams during the quarter.

Globally, TikTok removed over 204 million videos in the same period, equivalent to 0.7 percent of all uploads. Automated systems accounted for 91 percent of these removals, while human reviewers handled appeals, consulted external experts, and addressed emerging issues.

The company also deleted more than 118 million fake accounts and removed over 22 million accounts suspected to belong to underage users. TikTok said that its hybrid approach, combining machine learning with human oversight, is central to maintaining safety on the platform.

“By integrating advanced automated moderation technologies with the expertise of thousands of trust and safety professionals, TikTok ensures swift and consistent enforcement of content that violates its Community Guidelines,” the company said.

The report comes amid growing scrutiny of social media platforms in Kenya, following research by Mozilla into TikTok’s influence and content practices. The company’s actions reflect heightened sensitivity to regulatory and public concerns in the region, where debates around online safety, misinformation, and youth engagement remain significant.

Beyond enforcement, TikTok has introduced measures to encourage healthier digital habits. In late 2024, it launched a Time and Well-being hub along with Well-being Missions designed to promote more mindful use of the platform, particularly among teenagers.
