Tensions Rise in Mbeere North as By-Election Campaigns Heat Up

A shop at Kanyuambora shopping centre was looted on Thursday morning as campaigns intensified ahead of the Mbeere North by-elections.
Footage shows several people, many wearing green campaign reflectors, forcing their way into the premises and removing goods before scattering. The motive for the incident is still unclear, though the presence of campaign attire linked to one of the parliamentary candidates has prompted questions about whether the disturbance was politically related.
Police have not confirmed any connection to the ongoing contest. The unrest occurred as major campaign activities unfolded in the constituency. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addressed a large gathering in Kanyuambora, urging residents to support United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Muthende.
He was accompanied by Geoffrey Ruku, the former MP whose move to the Cabinet created the current vacancy. Meanwhile, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua campaigned in Nthawa wards, visiting Muguka farms and the busy Mla Chake market.
His engagements focused on supporting Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Karish, who is considered Muthende’s main competitor. The race has become a close contest between Muthende and Karish, with both sides deploying senior political figures to strengthen their campaigns.
Strategies have ranged from small meetings with residents to larger rallies, including community breakfasts held earlier in the week.
