Tanzanian Politician MP Blocked From Attending Raila Odinga’s Burial

Tanzanian authorities have arrested and detained acting CHADEMA Chairperson John Heche at the Isibania One Stop Border Post as he was coming to Kenya.

Heche was on his way to Kenya to represent detained opposition leader Tundu Lissu at the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, scheduled to take place in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday.

In a video seen by Samrack Media on October 18, the party official is seen questioning authorities over his detention and the confiscation of his passport.

“I have not done anything wrong. Stop intimidating me. You have taken my passport without explanation. If going against President Samia Suluhu is wrong, then let us know so that I may join CCM. I just want to go and bury Raila Odinga,” he said.

Heche was arrested at 2:00PM on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in Mara Region at the Tanzania–Kenya border

“In addition to detaining him, the Tanzania Immigration Authority has confiscated his passport without providing any explanation for the decision. Preventing Hon. Heche from traveling to Kenya to express condolences to the Kenyan people denies citizens of that country their right to be comforted by their neighbors in times of national tragedy, including bereavement,” read part of the statement issued by Chadema.

“We call upon the Government of Tanzania to release Hon. Heche immediately and to stop harassing our Party leaders by denying them their right to leave the country.”

Raila Odinga’s Burial will be conducted on Sunday October 19 according to the traditions of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK).

John Heche Blocked From Attending Raila Odinga’S Burial

Heche would have been among several political leaders from across Africa who travelled to honour the late former Prime Minister.

On October 17, leaders — including current and former heads of state — led by President William Ruto, attended the funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Other heads of state present include the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the President of Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie.

Former heads of state who have attended Odinga’s funeral include former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

For those unable to attend in person, several leaders sent representatives. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu sent Vice President Philip Mpango; South Sudan President Salva Kiir was represented by Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng Garang; while Rwandan President Paul Kagame sent Rwanda’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Vincent Biruta.

Felix Makinda (@felix_makinda) added:

“This is very sad. Should let our relatives from Mara pay their tribute.”

Tylinc Ndungu (@TylincN) appealed directly to the Tanzanian president:

“@SuluhuSamia please let them pass through to Kenya.”
