Six Dead as Helicopter Crashes in Nandi

Six people died on Saturday afternoon when a helicopter crashed in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-county, Nandi County.

The Airbus Helicopters H125, registered 5Y-DSB, went down at approximately 4:45 p.m. and caught fire shortly after impact. The helicopter, operated by a company based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, had departed the capital earlier that day at 11:02 a.m. Flight tracking data shows the journey from Nairobi but does not record its landing or subsequent departure times.

Records indicate the aircraft had flown twice earlier in February, including a flight on 21 February from Nairobi to Wilson Airport and another on 22 February from an undisclosed location. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the crash site in an attempt to rescue survivors, but authorities later confirmed that all passengers had died.

Police have recovered bodies from the wreckage and are awaiting formal identification. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, though there is speculation that high-profile passengers may have been aboard.

The helicopter has a history of transporting notable figures. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen used the aircraft in September 2025, while former Prime Minister Raila Odinga flew in it during a burial ceremony in April 2022, when it was vandalised and sustained windscreen damage.
