Ruto Pledges New Airport and World-Class Stadium for Kisii

President William Ruto has announced plans to build a modern airport in Kisii County and expand Gusii Stadium into an international-standard facility, with construction expected to begin next month.
The projects were unveiled during the NYOTA capital disbursement programme in the Nyanza region. Ruto said he will personally lead a development tour of Kisii next month to officially launch the initiatives. He told residents that the government had committed to transforming the county through major infrastructure investment, including the start of airport construction.
The government had initially explored developing a new airport site, but challenges related to land acquisition led to a decision to upgrade the existing Suneka airstrip. Ruto said Ksh400 million has been allocated for the project, which will include runway improvements. Construction is scheduled to start next month.
The upgraded facility is expected to reduce pressure on smaller airstrips such as Kabunde in Homa Bay and work alongside Kisumu International Airport. The project also forms part of a wider aviation plan that includes the proposed Narok Airport, aimed at strengthening regional passenger and cargo connectivity.
Gusii Stadium is also set for major redevelopment, with Ksh770 million allocated for its expansion to meet international standards. According to the President, the current stadium grounds are insufficient for the planned upgrade. As a result, the project will extend into the adjacent ASK showgrounds.
Ruto said the government has reached an agreement with ASK management to relocate their activities, allowing construction to proceed. Parts of the existing stadium will be demolished, and football matches will be moved to alternative venues during the renovation period.
Once completed, the expanded stadium is expected to host regional and international sporting events, supporting local businesses and increasing Kisii’s visibility as a sports destination.
Beyond the airport and stadium projects, the President reiterated his directive to relocate Kisii GK Prison from the town centre. The land will be used for affordable housing developments as part of a broader urban renewal strategy.
The government says the move is intended to improve land use within the town and support planned growth in housing and public infrastructure.
